Ridge approximation for thin nematic polymer networks

چکیده
Nematic polymer networks (NPNs) are nematic elastomers within which the director is enslaved to elastic deformation. The free energy of a NPN sheet thickness $h$ has both stretching and bending components (the former scaling like h, latter $h^3$). sheets bear field $\mathbf{m}$ imprinted in them (usually, uniformly throughout their thickness); they can be activated by changing order (e.g. illumination or heating). This paper illustrates an attempt compute show role it play determining shape. Our approach approximate: surface consists flat sectors connected ridges, where unit normal jumps concentrated. By increasing number we should get closer real situation, smooth distributed on it. method applied disk with spiraling hedgehog. It shown that upon activation disk, tiny hand, able grab rigid lamina.

Approximation by Ridge Functions and Neural Networks
We investigate the efficiency of approximation by linear combinations of ridge functions in the metric of L2(B ) with Bd the unit ball in Rd. If Xn is an n-dimensional linear space of univariate functions in L2(I), I = [−1, 1], and Ω is a subset of the unit sphere Sd−1 in Rd of cardinality m, then the space Yn := span{r(x · ξ) : r ∈ Xn, ω ∈ Ω} is a linear space of ridge functions of dimension ≤...
متن کاملPretransitional Nematic Ordering in Liquid Crystals with Dispersed Polymer Networks
The birefringence induced by partially ordered polymer networks dispersed in an isotropic phase of liquid crystals is studied. Polymer networks were formed by the polymerization of 1–4 % mixtures of prepolymer in the nematic phase of liquid crystals. The partial nematic ͑paranematic͒ ordering is analyzed in terms of the Landau–de Gennes approach using a simple model of an array of thin fibrils, w...

متن کاملA near-stationary subspace for ridge approximation
Response surfaces are common surrogates for expensive computer simulations in engineering analysis. However, the cost of fitting an accurate response surface increases exponentially as the number of model inputs increases, which leaves response surface construction intractable for many models. We propose ridge approximation for fitting response surfaces in several variables. A ridge function is...
متن کاملWaves at the Nematic-isotropic Interface: Nematic–non-nematic and Polymer-nematic Mixtures
We extend the theory for surface modes at the nematic-isotropic interface[2, 3, 5, 7] to study comparatively two systems: nematic–nonnematic and polymer-nematic mixtures. We employ the dynamical generalization of the Landau-de Gennes model for the orientational (non-conserved) order parameter, coupled with the Cahn-Hilliard equation for concentration (conserved parameter), and include hydrodyna...
